Artificial Intelligence – Is it really a force for good?

Melting Polar Ice Caps

We’ve all seen The Matrix and The Terminator. We know that AI is always depicted as a force of oppression, used to manipulate the masses and eventually desecrate planet Earth and all that we hold dear.

That is, of course, a dystopian outlook on AI developments.

However, it does beg the question, could that actually happen? Are we giving too much power to the machines? Is this really having a positive effect on the human race?

Unfortunately, I am not here to give you the answer. However, what I can do is explain the detrimental effects that ChatGPT, Bard and other AI content creation forums are having on the environment. It is shocking that the average user is blissfully unaware of the harm that they are inflicting, simply because they ‘can’t be arsed’ to write an essay for university.

To begin, how is ChatGPT powered and why is it harmful to the environment?

  1. Masses amounts of electricity is needed to power the data centres that run OpenAI. Typically data centres are powered by electricity which has a large carbon footprint depending on the type of power source used e.g. coal, gas, solar etc.
  2. Data centres get hot and need cooling. Electricity is generated into energy and then into heat (that’s why your laptop has a fan!). However, a large scale data centre needs masses amount of freshwater to cool it down…

I need not mention the growing concerns of global temperatures rising, the melting of the ice caps and loss of biodiversity within our natural landscapes. The growth of AI is alarming and I find it startling how we are so willing to embrace it.

Are there no alarm bells ringing?

Therefore, I appeal to you – the business owner. Creating prospect engagement is a skill that is ever evolving. I have a passion for influence through language and I don’t believe it will die out soon. However, the creative art of humans influencing through language IS on its way out.

You have the power to try and save it.

GlobeTrot-Copy focuses on human connection through language. But soon it will be machine connection via human input. That is not a world that I want to live in. I love feeling like I am being talked to through an article, a website or an email. I enjoy the feelings that it emotes because I feel like I am being directly addressed by another human, regardless of where they are.

Don’t let this ancient art die out

We can generate copy that travels with a clean conscience.
